After some months of Beta testing, Mozilla has finally made Firefox for iOS official. The company had initially confirmed it would not be making the iOS version of the browser but the company made a U-Turn by May and the closed beta testing began in September.
Firefox, Opera and Chrome as some of the most widely used browsers around so it is unfortunate that the former of the trio is just joining the iOS party. Due to Apple’s strict policy of enforcing third-party browser apps in using the platforms’ WebKit rendering engine which is the same used by Safari.
Mozilla uses its own rendering engine called Gecko which is also tied to the user interface but had to embrace change to build a Firefox app using Webkit for iOS and manage to maintain the core features of the browser.
Some of the key features in Firefox for iOS includes – private browsing (only on iOS 9), Firefox sync, intelligent searches, easy access to top sites, intuitive visual tabs and more.
Firefox for iOS works on iOS 8.0.2 (and upwards) running devices (iPhones & iPads) and is optimised to work with the recently announced Apple iPad Pro. It is available for download as expected for free on App Store.
