Nokia MixRadio Set To Become Standalone Music Streaming Service

Microsoft has announced Music-Streaming app preloaded on Nokia smartphones and Lumia devices would spin out and exist as a standalone music service. This piece of news means Nokia MixRadio would not only be limited to Microsoft Windows Phones Platform but also available on Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android platform.

MixRadio launched as Nokia Music app in 2011 preloaded mainly on Nokia mobile phones but thrived well even when there were Spotify, Pandora and iHeartRadio. MixRadio offers a collection of playlist which can either be downloaded for offline listening or streamed online as deemed fit. Most features of the MixRadio has been free with no advertising. But in 2013, Nokia added an option of payment for better audio quality, a web version to access the app on Non-Nokia mobiles, unlimited skips and more added features.

“Basically, we’re planning a spin-off,” MixRadio chief Jyrki Rosenberg said in an interview with The Guardian.

“I’ve been meeting with potential investors around the world in the last few weeks. We have very strong interest from investors in the US, Europe and Asia, and we remain open for further discussions.”

The Nokia MixRadio currently has ‘millions of Happy customers’ and it is also available in 31 countries, Jyrki Rosenberg added.

As Microsoft continues it restructuring, the recently acquired mobile arm of Nokia by Microsoft is the section deeply affected. In what would be one of the deepest Job cut in Microsoft’s history, the company has announced it is cutting 18,500 jobs with 12,500 of it coming from the acquired mobile division.

Along with announcing the Job Cut and Nokia MixRadio spinning off, Microsoft has also announced it has discontinued Nokia X range of Android smartphone. It is good to note that Android smartphones from Nokia only survived about 5 months and despite only just announcing the Nokia X2 some weeks ago. Although Microsoft will continue to sell and support existing Nokia X products.

The design of the Nokia X range of smartphones would be used in designing more affordable Lumia Devices in the nearer future. Along with the Nokia X range and Nokia X2 smartphones, Microsoft is also discontinuing the Nokia Asha brand of feature phones.
