Previously selling their phones in countries like Nigeria and India under the Obi Mobiles brand. US based company, Obi Worldphone has taken a fresh approach with a new series of phones – the Obi Worldphone SF1 and Obi Worldphone SJ1.5.
The phones are not only well designed but also follows the general Chinese OEMs norm of releasing phones with high end specs for an affordable price. Let’s get into the details.
Obi Worldphone SF1
The Obi Worldphone SF1 sports a 5-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) Full HD JDI display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4, powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor clocked at 1.5GHz with Adreno 405 GPU, 2GB/3GB RAM and 16GB/32GB space of internal storage.
The rest of the specs includes – a microSD card slot (up to 64GB), 5MP front facing camera, 13MP rear facing camera, Dolby Audio Surround 7.1, Dual SIM slots, 4G LTE, runs Android 5.0.2 Lollipop OS with Obi Lifespeed UI and a 3000mAh battery. It is priced at $199 (16GB)/$249 (32GB) and is named after the city of San Francisco in the US.
Obi Worldphone SJ1.5
The Obi Worldphone SJ1.5 much cheaper and as expected with reduced specs. The device is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6580 processor clocked at 1.3GHz paired with 1GB RAM, 16GB space of internal storage and a 5-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) HD display.
The rest of the specs includes – Dual SIM functionality, a front facing 5MP camera, a rear facing 8MP camera, a microSD card slot (up to 32GB), Android 5.1 Lollipop OS with Obi Lifespeed UI and a 3000mAh Li-Po battery also. It is priced at $129 and is named after the city of San Jose in the US.
Obi Worldphone is a Silicon Valley based company which has the backing of former Apple CEO, John Sculley; the company plans to offer the Obi Worldphone SF1 and the Obi Worldphone SJ1.5 in emerging markets in Asia, Middle East and Africa like India, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Tanzania, the UAE, Turkey and Vietnam.
Both smartphones would start selling in October in some of the countries mentioned above (and more) in both Online and Offline retail outlets. The company expects both device to be available in 50 – 70 countries by 2017.
