Last week, Oculus announced its first standalone product, the Oculus Go at the Connect developer conference in San Jose, California. The wireless VR headset by the Facebook-owned company is scheduled to be released sometime next year (early 2018) for a price tag starting at US$ 199.
Conceived to bring more freedom and accessibility to virtual reality (VR), Oculus Go works standalone i.e it neither requires any cable nor mobile phone/PC. It is super lightweight and designed with soft, breathable fabrics, adjustable straps and next-generation lenses offering a wide field of view with reduced glare.
The all-in-one Go VR headset features integrated spatial audio, built-in speakers, 3.5 mm headphone jack and high-resolution fast-switch LCD screen. It will ship with a controller input set similar to that of the Gear VR,and apps on the duo (Gear VR and Oculus Go) are binary compatible.
The company also shed more light on its upcoming standalone VR hardware product, codenamed Project Santa Cruz, to bring untethered form factor to PC VR experience. It now features 2x positionally tracked controllers with infrared LEDs, which leverages on constellation tracking technology.
