CES 2020: OnePlus Concept One With Invisible Rear Camera

OnePlus showcased its new prototype flagship – the OnePlus Concept One at the just concluded CES 2020 in Las Vegas. The highlight of the device is the use of electrochromic glass (a.k.a. smart glass or dynamic glass) technology to conceal and reveal its triple camera lenses. It also controls the amount of light that reaches the camera.

By leveraging its existing partnership with British automotive manufacturer, McLaren, the disruptive Chinese company became the ‘first in the industry to explore the applications of electrochromic glass in smartphones’. This glass solution is used in the aviation and high-end automobile industries, and currently expensive to mass produce.

In terms of aesthetics and design, the OnePlus Concept One combines glass and premium luxury leather with the same papaya-orange inspired trim synonymous with McLaren. The triple rear camera setup – 48MP (f/1.6) camera, 16MP (f/2.2) ultra wide-angle lens and 8MP (f/2.4) telephoto lens for 3x zoom – appears to be the same as the T-Mobile exclusive OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition smartphone.

Commenting on the launch, Jo Lewis, Colour and Materials Design Manager at McLaren Automotive, said;

“At McLaren we select the best quality leathers produced in the UK, Ireland and Scotland. The soft grained semi-aniline leather, is soft to touch, and due to the nature of the natural grain this creates a beautifully silky haptic.Leather exudes luxury therefore was one of aspects of this OnePlus concept device that we were keen to offer our input. Our design at McLaren embraces the natural features of the leather through the subtle grain variation which adds character to each car – making each McLaren completely unique and therefore making this OnePlus concept device follow in a similar unique path.”

Asides these details, there is little information about the full specs of the device but we would expect it to feature top-of-the-range ones. As the name suggests, the device is not expected to be commercially available anytime soon.
