With the likes of Huawei and LG showing off smartphones – the G6 and P10/P10 Plus (respectively) with quality dual cameras, Chinese device maker – Oppo demoed a new smartphone camera technology using dual cameras at the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona.
The Oppo 5x Dual Camera Zoom concept offers up to 5x zoom without the image losing its quality and up to 10x zoom overall. It is contained in a 5.7 mm thick module that will fit into any smartphone regardless of the width and the technology uses periscope-like design to achieve lossless zoom.
It relies on dual camera sensors – one arranged traditionally and the other at 90-degrees towards the side and also directed through a prism. The prism can adjust at a relative angle of 0.0025 degrees and Oppo uses a supercharged optical image stabilisation (OIS) to ensure all of this happens stabilised.

Oppo is said to have licensed the technology from another firm and has filed more than 50 patents for this 5x Dual Camera Zoom technology which took more than a year to develop. The company does not have any smartphone with this feature yet but it could make its way to upcoming smartphones from Oppo in the nearest future.
