Orange Klif Firefox OS smartphones now selling in Africa

Orange and Firefox has started the roll-out of the Orange Klif (Alcatel OneTouch Orange Klif) smartphone in Africa. The device which was announced at the MWC 2015 earlier this year is now on sale in Senegal and Madagascar. Other Countries in Africa like Egypt, Tunisia, Cameroon, Botswana, Mali, The Ivory Coast, Niger, Kenya and Mauritius are expected to get the device too.

“We are pleased to partner with Orange to bring the mobile Web to users in a substantial number of new growth markets across Africa and the Middle East said Andreas Gal, CTO of Mozilla. “I’m also thrilled to see how the imminent arrival of Firefox OS has created excitement in the local Mozilla communities.”

The Orange Klif smartphone sports a 3.5-inch (320 x 480 pixels) HVGA display, powered by a dual-core processor clocked at 1.0GHz paired with 256MB of RAM and 512MB space of internal storage. There is a microSD card slot for storage expansion (up to 32GB).

The rest of the specs includes – 2MP main camera with LED flash, GPS, Dual SIM functionality, 3G+ (HSPA+), FM Radio and runs on Firefox OS v2.0. It is backed by a 1300mAh battery which provides around 380 hrs (2G)/286 hrs (3G) of standby, around 7.1 hrs (2G)/6.2 hrs (3G) of  talktime and it takes around 3.3 hrs to the battery fully charged. 

The Orange Klif smartphone is exclusive to Orange mobile networks but is actually developed by Alcatel. The company would be providing users with data, text and voice calls for a price starting at under $40.

Firefox OS smartphones arrived on the continent last month through South Africa in partnership with MTN. In other markets where telco company, Orange doesn’t operate like Nigeria we won’t be seeing any Firefox OS smartphones yet.
