At the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2017, Qualcomm introduced its latest mobile platform for mid-range mobile devices – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450. It is the direct successor to the Snapdragon 435 mobile platform which can be found in devices such as the Xiaomi Redmi 4X, Huawei Enjoy 7 Plus, LG X Venture, Huawei Enjoy 6s and ZTE Blade V8.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 Mobile platform is based on the more power efficient 14nm FinFET process (the first in the Snapdragon 400 tier) and significantly improves on its predecessor in four key areas: CPU and graphics performance, imaging, LTE connectivity and battery life.
While the 450 is smaller in size compared to the 435, it carries on the design principles i.e it uses 8x ARM Cortex-A53 configuration but the clock speed has gone up to 1.8GHz from 1.4GHz and the GPU has been touched up from 505 GPU to Adreno 506 GPU. It is noted to offer up to 25% higher performance in both aspects.
It supports 1920 x 1200 (FHD+) displays, Qualcomm Hexagon DSPsingle camera at up to 21MP and dual camera configuration up to 13MP + 13MP as well as real-time bokeh effects and can now capture videos at up to 1080p@60. The SD450 SoC is also equipped with the X9 LTE modem, 802.11ac with MU-MIMO support, USB 3.0 and Quick Charge 3.0, and promises up to deliver up to 4 hours more battery life.
In ranking, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 Mobile Platform is closer to the Snapdragon 625 with an 8x Cortex-A53 CPU configuration, X9 LTE modem and Adreno 506 GPU. It is expected to be available in retail devices by the end of the year (Q4 2017).
