Report: Google will partner Chinese OEM for the next Nexus devices

Most rumours last year suggested that Google was looking to kill off its Nexus line of devices due to its commitment to Android L (Android Lollipop) and Android One but that didn’t turn out true as the company later announced the Nexus 6 smartphone and the Nexus 9 tablet.

Google Partners Chinese OEM for Nexus devices

The Google Nexus 6 smartphone made by Motorola and the Nexus 9 tablet made by HTC taking over from ASUS. Google is said to already making plans for the next generation of the Nexus device which is not expected to launch until later this year.

According to different sources, Google will partner a Chinese OEM for the next generation of Nexus devices but no tablets. This puts the likes of Xiaomi, Huawei, Lenovo (Motorola), ZTE and OnePlus in that bracket. Over the years these listed companies have managed to bring international standard and have managed to drop the sub-standard tag attributed to Chinese OEMs.

Xiaomi could have an edge over the others thanks to the presence of an Ex-Googler in their ranks – Hugo Barra. Lenovo could also get the nod as they recently completed the purchase of Motorola from Google. Huawei has some chances too as it has managed to churn out beautiful devices and still rely majorly on its in-house built Kirin SoC. ZTE and OnePlus are said to have distant chances.

While it isn’t a bad idea for Google to try something different, I feel it’s time we have a Sony built Nexus smartphone which would be a beauty to behold. While there is no official word yet, if Google manages to choose any of the above Chinese OEM for the next Nexus smartphone which OEM do you think deserves it?
