Samsung has confirmed it has begun mass production of 4GB LPDDR4 DRAM and it is expected to debut in smartphones and tablets by early 2015. The company is known as a consumer electronic company but it make virtually most of the components that go into mobiles and the likes.
The 4GB LPDDR4 DRAM was said to be created using the company’s 20nm process; has an input/output data rate of 3200Mbps and consumes 40% power lesser thLPDDR4 LPDDR3 DRAM.
Commenting on the latest development , Joo Sun Choi, Executive Vice President of Memory Sales and Marketing at Samsung Electronics, said:
By initiating production of the 20nm 8Gb LPDDR4, which is even faster than the DRAM for PCs and servers and consumes much less energy, we are contributing to the timely launch of UHD, large-screen flagship mobile devices. As this major advancement in mobile memory demonstrates, we will continue to closely collaborate with global mobile device manufacturers to optimize DRAM solutions, making them suitable for next-generation mobile OS environments.
The new modules is also expected to bring support for video recording and playback in Ultra High Definition (UHD) as well as continous shooting ability for high resolution images of more than 20 megapixels.
Samsung has announced that the new chip would be available by early 2015. This should be goodnews as it would give more OEMS time to use the memory on their upcoming tablets and smartphones.
Having 4GB of RAM would be the new cool in smartphones and tablets by 2015. And it is highly likely to start with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6.
the question should have been – how would you like a 4GB RAM smartphone. my answer would have been – Where has it been all my life.
