Samsung could be making the headlines once again for ditching a long time partner for its own in-house made products. The South Korean company ditched Qualcomm for Exynos and possibly would soon be going head-to-head with Corning’s Gorilla Glass offering with the Turtle Glass.
Samsung Display (a subsidiary of Samsung) has filed for a patent for the moniker ‘Turtle Glass’ with the Korean Intellectual Patent Office in South Korea. The application also hints that the name would be used for a protective tempered glass designed for cameras, phones, tablets, music players and more.
It is possible the Samsung Turtle Glass would replace the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 used on the Galaxy Note5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ in any new offering from the company with the Samsung Galaxy S7 highly tipped still the glass protection could debut at any time.
Corning’s Gorilla Glass is probably the most popular but it not the only one available, another relatively popular player in that market is Asahi with the DragonTrail Glass. Samsung’s partnership with Corning goes as far back as the Samsung Galaxy S in 2010 and the latter’s Gorilla Glass solution has been used in most flagship from the company until today.
