Earlier than the usual IFA launch, Samsung has officially announced the Samsung Galaxy Note5. The phablet sized device has the same design language as the recently Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge; also not forgetting the distinguished S Pen which comes with improved functions.
Moving to the specs, the Samsung Galaxy Note5 features a 5.7-inch (2560 x 1440 pixels) Quad HD Super AMOLED display with a pixel density of 518ppi. The touch type fingerprint scanner is embedded into the large physical home button and with a tap of the stylus, it pops out of its sheath.
Talking about the S Pen – the functionality is much more improved and is located at the bottom right of the phone. The stylus has the ability to write on the screen without waking up the display, unlocking the device or even launching any app for that.
The S Pen can also take notes, screen shots, write annotations and quick launch apps. With the much more improved ‘Air command’ with added functions and also grants instant access to all the S Pen tools.
Under the hood, it is powered by the Exynos 7420 processor used on the Samsung Galaxy S6; the chipset is made using the 14nm FinFET process and is an octa-core one with four Cortex A57 cores at up to 2.1GHz and the remaining four Cortex A53 cores clocked at up to 1.5GHz.
The chipset is paired with 4GB LPDDR4 RAM and is available in either 32GB or 64GB space of non-expandable internal storage which both featuring the high-speed UFS 2.0 storage which iss much faster than the eMMC 5.0 storage. There is no microSD card slot and there is no 128GB storage variant in view.
On the rear, there is a 16MP camera with f/1.9 aperture, LED flash and OIS; it can record 2160p videos and livestream 1080p videos from Youtube. The front camera is a 5MP snapper with f/1.9 aperture and wide-angle lens. Connectivity options on the Samsung Galaxy Note5 includes – 4G LTE, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS/GLONASS/Beidou, Dual Band Wi-Fi and MIMO (2×2) antennas.
The Galaxy Note 5 heralds the birth of Samsung Pay in the US, the payment service which uses NFC and Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) will launch with the device. The fingerprint sensor is also much more updated to ensure secure transactions and more.
The Galaxy Note5 weighs 171 grams, measures 153.2 x 76.1 x 7.6mm in dimensions, runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS with TouchWIZ UI ontop. The device is backed by a non-removable 3000mAh battery with fast charging and Qi wireless charging support but a charging pad is needed.
Available colour options includes – Black Sapphire, White Pearl, Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium. The Samsung Galaxy Note5 starts selling in the US on August 21 and pre-orders are already underway. The device can be tested in over 7000 locations in the US starting tomorrow and will be sold on the four major carriers in the US with no word on pricing yet.
