Samsung and HTC took to the just concluded Mobile World Conference 2015 to announce their next generation flagship. The Korean company announced the Samsung Galaxy S6 and it’s edge variant – the Galaxy S6 Edge while the taiwanese company announced the HTC One M9.
The Galaxy S6 has received critical acclaim for being an evolutionary product with Samsung building the smartphone up from the scratch and using metal body of course while HTC received some knocks for only revolving the One M8 into the HTC One M9. Display and Design
The Samsung Galaxy S6 sports a 5.1-inch Quad HD super AMOLED display resulting in 587ppi while the HTC One M9 sports a 5-inch Full HD LCD display resulting in 441ppi.
Samsung made sure the Galaxy S6 was thinner than the Galaxy S5 at just 6.9mm (143.3 x 70.8 x 6.9mm) and is about 2.8mm thinner and 14 percent lighter than the One M9 also. The company ensures its metal body sides and glass back ooze premium more than the One M9 has semblance with the One M8 with its full metal Unibody.
Processor and Memory
Even before Samsung announced the Galaxy S6; we already know the smartphone would rely on the Exynos 7420 processor instead of the Snapdragon 810 from Qualcomm. Since HTC does not make its own chipset, it instead relied on the S810 processor.
The Exynos 7420 is a 64-bit octa-core chipset with quad-core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A53 and the other 4 -1.9 GHz Cortex-A57; the processor uses the Mali-T760 GPU. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 MSM8994 is also 64-bit enabled with quad-core 1.5GHz Cortex-A53 and the other 4 cores – 2GHz Cortex-A57; the processor uses Adreno 430 GPU.
Both smartphones uses 3GB of RAM; Samsung decided to ditch a removable battery and a microSD card slot for different storage options – 32GB/64GB/128GB options while the One M9 comes with 32GB space of internal storage which is expandable by microSD card up to 128GB more space.
Camera
Samsung decided to go with a 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and f/1.9 lens for less blurry photos and a quicker auto focus. HTC opted for a 20MP Toshiba made camera with Dual LED flash and sensor. The Galaxy S6 has a 5MP front camera while the One M9 has a 4MP Ultrapixel front camera.
Operating System
Both the Samsung Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9 both run on Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system with their respective company’s UI ontop. The One M9 comes with Sense 7.0 UI ontop which offers users customization to the barest minimum and apps can also be re-arranged to suit the occasion. The Galaxy S6 comes also with a much redesigned TouchWiz UI which comes with a cleaner interface and less pre-loaded apps.
Battery
Some would say bigger does not mean better but over time we would know for sure. The Samsung Galaxy S6 comes with a 2550mAh battery size and also comes with Wireless charging features while the HTC One M9 comes with a 2840mAh battery.
Verdict
Both smartphones both have the usual aura of flagship and would be sure priced according to its status. In several user polls online, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy Edge both have an edge over the HTC One M9 due to the love users have for body build of the S6.
