Samsung has announced the ‘Active Version‘ of the Galaxy S8 for the US market, as expected. Dubbed the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, the durable and rugged smartphone sports a refined design for reliable durability but maintains the same premium performance ability of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.
Built with military-grade materials (MIL-STD-810G), the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is dust and water-resistant (IP68) and has a sturdy metal frame plus bumper to protect against shock, abrasion, tilting and twisting. For a secure grip, the back cover also feature a rugged, tough texture.
The S8 Active feature a shatter resistant screen sitting on a 5.8-inch AMOLED display with QHD screen resolution and 18.5:9 aspect ratio. On the inside, it relies on an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor paired with 4GB LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB built-in expandable storage (UFS 2.1).
The device maintains the same camera set-up as the Galaxy S8 and S8+ i.e a rear 12MP f/1.7 dual pixel rear camera and front 8MP f/1.7 autofocus camera. Connectivity and port options, as well as the Bixby voice assistant and sensor options including iris, fingerprint and heart rate monitor remain the same.
Like the Galaxy S7 Active, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active comes ready with DIRECTV NOW app and has an Activity Zone which can be activated by a press of the button or simple swipe. The Zone is now integrated with Bixby to quickly access lifestyle features such as compass, flashlight and stopwatch.
The device is thicker (152.14 x 74.9 x 9.9mm), heavier (207 grams) and backed by a huge 4,000mAh battery compared to the Galaxy S8 (148.9 x 68.1 x 8 mm; 155 grams & 3,000mAh). It is also protected by the Samsung Knox along with biometric security features such as fingerprint and iris scanners.
Available in Meteor Gray and Titanium Gold colour options, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active will land in stores on August 11. It will be exclusive to AT&T for a limited time. Pricing starts at $28.34 for 30 months (i.e about $850 outright). The carrier is also offering a number of freebies.
