Samsung Electronics has unveiled its latest generations of foldable and flip smartphones – the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Galaxy Z Flip3 5G at its Galaxy Unpacked event. Both 5G devices (sub-6 and mmWave) are IPX8-certified (water and dust resistance) and built with Armor Aluminum body with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus for protection against accidental drops and scratches. They both come pre-loaded with Android 11.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G
The Galaxy Z Fold3 5G is Samsung’s first foldable smartphone to support the brand’s S Pen (sold separately) and first to feature an under-display front camera on the main display – a 4MP (f/1.8 lens, 2.0μm) unit. It is fitted with a large 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x (Infinity Flex) main display with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and 6.2-inch HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with the same refresh rate. The second front camera is a 10MP (f/2.2, 2.0μm) snapper on the cover screen.
The third-gen Fold dons the same triple camera setup as the Fold 2 5G – a 12MP (f/1.8, OIS, Dual Pixel AF, 1.8μm) wide-angle unit paired with 12MP (f/2.2, 1.12μm) ultra-wide and 12MP (f/2.4) telephoto units. It is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 mobile platform paired with 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and the option of either 256GB or 512GB (UFS 3.1) storage. Power is supplied by a 4,400mAh battery with 25W fast wired charging, 11W wireless charging and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.
The S Pen functionality on the Z Fold3 5G works on both the main and foldable screen. Users can jot notes, draw, sketch and perform all the productivity features available on the Galaxy Note Series with either the S Pen Fold Edition or S Pen Pro. There is also no slot for the S pen on the phone. Pricing starts at GBP 1599.99/ EUR 1,799.99/USD 1,799.99 for the base model and it arrives in Phantom Black, Phantom Green, and Phantom Silver colours.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G
Backed by a 3,300mAh battery with 15W fast charging, the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G retains the same 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED display as the previous generation but dons a new 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The cover AMOLED screen, which shows messages and notifications, has increased by 4x (from 1.1-inc to 1.9-inch) and has Samsung Pay built-in for easy check-out at supported outlets worldwide.
The cover screen’s dual camera setup includes a 10MP (f/2.4, 1.22μm) selfie and 12MP (f/2.2, 1.12μm) ultra-wide with LED flash. The device is also based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 mobile platform and comes with the option of 256GB or 512GB (UFS 3.1) storage with only 8GB LPDDR5 RAM. It has the same ‘Hideaway Hinge’ for flipping and keeping the device firm during Flex Mode. The shorter ‘Sweeper technology’ inside the hinge also prevents dusts and other particles from building up.
The Z FLip3 5G is available in a general – Cream, Green, Lavender and Phantom Black colours as well as a three other Samsung.com-exclusive colours – Gray, Pink and White. There are also Ring grips and strap cases accessories to switch up the phone’s style. Pricing starts at GBP 949.99/ EUR 1,049.99/USD 999.99 for the base model.
