Samsung has announced the 2nd-gen Gear Fit device – the Samsung Gear Fit 2, almost two years after the first one. The $180-priced smartband is described by WIRED as ‘half fitness tracker, half smartwatch‘ because it blurs the line between both set of devices. Pre-orders start by June 3 and shipping is expected to ship a week later.
The Samsung Gear Fit 2 has a smaller 1.5-inch curved AMOLED display with 216 x 432 pixels screen resolution, runs the company’s TIZEN OS and comes in Black, Blue and Pink colour options. It also has a 512MB of RAM, built-in GPS tracking, 4GB built-in storage space, and is resistant to both dust and water.
The new smartband comes with better activity tracking thanks to its built-in GPS receiver and has sensors such as barometer, accelerometer, gyro and heart rate monitor. It shows the time, count the steps taken, current activity, calories burnt and also syncs with the S Health app or other fittness tracking apps.
The Samsung Gear Fit 2 has a 1GHz dual-core processor under the hood, a pre-loaded spotify app for streaming music – needs either Wi-Fi connection or smartphone tethering and is available in both large or small size options.
