Sharp officially announces 7-inch Tablets with IGZO-MEMS Display coming 2015

Earlier than the 2017 expected date, Sharp has announced a new tablet with a mixture of display technology and has stated the device would be available by the first half of 2015. The tablet sports IGZO-MEMS display (a mixture of Sharp’s IGZO and Qualcomm’s MEMS display) which results in a case of lower power consumption and higher colour reproducibility which betters that of the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) in general.

Sharp uses the IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) TFT display on smartphones, TVs, e.t.c allowing for significant higher pixel density, reduces power consumption and due to their transparency the quality of image displayed is enhanced. The forthcoming tablet would be the first to sport an IGZO display. Qualcomm on the other hand uses the MEMS (Micro-Electronic Mechanical system aka MIRASOL) display on the Toq smartwatch. MEMS displays are Seven times more energy efficient than LCD panels.

The combination of both display technologies – IGZO and MEMS (IGZO-MEMS display) could result in a massively thin, bright and sharp display which would still end up not fall back on the battery life (low power consumption).

The Sharp tablet expected with the IGZO-MEMS Display features a 7-inch IGZO-MEMS TFT 1280 x 800 pixels resolution, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset, front and rear cameras, run Android 4.4 Kitkat Out-of-the-box, IPX5/IPX7 waterproof certified, and would come in LTE/3G and WIFI Models.

The announcement only points to an early 2015 (first half) release, but no word on the official name of the device, the pricing details nor its availability in the market (whether selected markets or a global rollout). We will just have to keep our fingers crossed and see how events unfold.
