Sharp has unveiled its first and Japan’s first 5G smartphone – the Sharp Aquos R5G. The flagship has a dual-notched screen – the top U-shaped notch houses the 16.4MP front camera while the bottom notch holds the capacitive fingerprint sensor, and is based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 5G mobile platform which translates into support for 5G mmWave and sub-6 to SA and NSA modes.

The Sharp Aquos R5G has a 6.5-inch QHD+ Pro IGZO (LCD) display with 120GHz refresh rate and HDR enhancer feature; stereo speakers, 12GB LPDDR5 RAM + 256GB (UFS 3.0) storage, microSDXC card slot (expandable up to 1TB), IP68-certification (dust and water resistant up to 1.5m), 3.5mm headphone jack and USB Type-C port.

The phone comes pre-loaded with Android 10 and power is supplied by a 3,730mAh battery. The rear quad-camera system, which are aligned vertically, consists of a primary 12.2MP (f/1.7) snapper with OIS, 12.2MP telephoto snapper with OIS, 48MP (f/2.9) super wide-angle snapper with 120o FoV and a ToF module. The super wide-angle camera can shoot up to 8K videos.

There is no word on pricing, however, the Aquos R5G is expected to arrive just in time for the roll-out of Japan’s 5G networks by March 2020. The country’s major telco carriers – NDDI and Softbank are expected to launch their 5G services in March while NTT Docomo will introduce 5G in the Spring.
