The market is yet to see an influx of mobile devices using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 and Mediatek’s Helio X20 (MT6797) processors, however, it seems people are already looking ahead to the next-gen flagship processors from both companies – the Snapdragon 830 and Helio X30.
According to Taiwan’s Economic Daily, in an attempt to fight off stiff competition, Mediatek is ready to skip the 16nm process and go with the more advanced 10nm manufacturing process in making the Mediatek Helio X30 chipset.
The successor to the similar 10-core Helio X20 which was based on the 20nm process, will include 10 CPU cores in the following architecture – 4x Cortex A72 + 2x Cortex A72 + 2x Cortex A53 + 2x Cortex A53 in a four-cluster design.
Also, the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 processor is also expected to be built using this process but will continue to use the in-house developed Kryo CPU cores just as the Snapdragon 820. It is however not stated if the CPU cores will remain four or will increase.
There is no official confirmation to back up these claims but the report is said to have originated from people with knowledge on the matter. Samples of the Snapdragon 830 and Helio X30 SoCs should be available towards the end of the year (2016) and mass production is expected to commence by early 2017.
