Sony Mobile is a little bit sceptical about adopting USB Type-C Port on its upcoming smartphones. The Japanese company says it is in discussion but won’t be taking the plunge until the connectivity option becomes a regular in the market.
Speaking at a Technology Workshop in Taipei,Takeshi Nitta, a Program Manager at Sony Mobiles’ Tokyo Office made this revelation, he stated that the industry still needs some time to migrate from USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 standard to the new connector model. Presumably, Sony doesn’t want to be one of the early adopters.
Nitta was talking about the just released Sony Xperia Z3+ and suggested the fact that even though the USB Type-C has a small form factor, it doesn’t align with the company’s goal to produce thinner and lighter smartphones. Instead, the company believes thinner camera and display modules would however help it achieve the goal.
USB Type-C is gaining massive attention due to its faster USB 3.1 data transfer speed, improved power delivery, and its reversible plug connector nature. It also has support for a wide range of video output types such as HDMI and DisplayPort. Even though the cable looks small, it is not just restricted to mobile phones alone it can be used on Laptops, PCS and even Servers.
Apple and made the connectivity option more popular when both companies launched the new Macbook and the new Google Chromebook Pixel. Google has also stated that it sees USB Type-C connector on Android smartphones and Chromebook in the near future.
