Xiaomi has joined the ranks of Apple (Apple Pay), Samsung (Samsung Pay), Huawei (Huawei Pay), Google (Android Pay) and LG (LG Pay); with the introduction of the Xiaomi Mi Pay. The mobile payment service is only available in China and is currently limited to Xiaomi’s only phone with NFC – the Mi 5.
Launched in partnership with China UnionPay, the Xiaomi Mi Pay supports up to 20 credit and debit cards from 20 popular Chinese financial institutions (banks). Users will be able to add up to 8 cards on one smartphone and transactions are carried out seamlessly via the Mi Wallet app.
Opening this app allows Xiaomi Mi 5 users add card number and other bank details, and verify all these via SMS. All provided details are kept safely and useful when making future payments. The Mi Pay also supports transportation cards (public) in some major cities in the country.
Meanwhile, fellow Chinese mobile payment service – Huawei Pay, which now supports up to 25 banks, retains the title of being the first to support both bank cards and public transport cards. Other solutions such as Samsung Pay and Apple Pay could also be used to pay for transportation in select cities, such as Guangzhou (Canton).
