VAIO has officially announced its first smartphone – the VAIO phone which would be first available in its home country market – Japan. The VAIO phone comes with mid-rage specs and has near like for like specs with the Panasonic Eluga U2; the only notable difference is that the Eluga U2 uses a Full HD display instead of the HD on this model.
The Phone was expected to expected to arrive at the MWC 2015 but the company decided to launch the device days after the event.
Moving to the specs, the VAIO Phone (JCI VA-10J) sports a 5-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) HD display, powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm snapdragon 410 processor with Adreno 306 GPU, 2GB of RAM and 16GB space of internal storage. There is a microSD card slot on-board for storage expansion.
On the rear, there is a 13MP main camera with LED flash, capable of recording 1080p videos and a front facing 5MP camera. The device runs Android 5.0 Lollipop OS oout-of-the-box; supports Bluetooth, GPS, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity options and is backed by a 2500mAh battery.
The VAIO Phone measures 71.3 × 141.5 × 7.95mm, weighs 130 grams and costs 51,000 Yen ($420) sans-contract and is also available on a 2-year contract from B-Mobile starting March 20. Potential customers might feel hard done by as the $420 price tag is too much the Eluga U2 which has an improved Full HD display costs almost half of the device at $254 (NT$ 7990).
