A new Anti-theft feature is coming with the WatchOS 2.0 software update for the Apple Watch; this feature is called Activation Lock. Currently, it is very easy to steal the Apple Watch at the moment – once you swipe the device, you can go ahead and wipe user data off it. Once this is done the Watch can be used by anybody with no trace of the former ownership.
Activation lock is very similar to the Anti-theft feature on iPhone, iPads and iPod Touchs which has been available since the release of the iOS 7. This only means whoever wants to steal your Apple Watch would have more work to cut out rather than just accessing the device freely, erase your data off it and reset it back to factory settings.
So how does the Activation Lock Feature works?
Once the Activation Lock feature is enabled, it is impossible to factory reset the Apple Watch back to its ground state without entering the user’s Apple ID and Password. This is a very good development considering this is the first of so many major updates coming.
One advantage, Activation Lock feature on iPhones, iPads and iPod Touchs still has over the Apple Watch is the ability to be used in recovering the devices by tracking their locations. Currently the watch does not have this but who says there is no possibility of having the feature at a later date.
Apple Watch users can celebrate as it took six good years before the company could bring the Anti-theft feature to iOS but the watch owners would be getting it in some months after release. The WatchOS 2.0 update which would also bring 3rd party native apps to the Apple Watch was announced alongside the iOS 9; both are expected to launch later this year.
