Never afraid to take on competition and beat them at their own game, popular messaging app, Whatsapp has added video calling to its platform. This latest feature has been long time coming and has begun rolling out to all users on Android, iOS and Windows Phone.
Similar to Microsoft’s Skype, Apple’s FaceTime, Google’s new Duo app and Facebook Messenger; Whatsapp Video calling feature allows users make one-on-one calls with real time video. To get started, the user needs to tap on the phone icon in the top right hand corner of a conversation to choose the option to start a video or voice call.
During the call, the camera can be switched from the front to the rear and also it can be cancelled or muted. Also the feature doesn’t allow conference video calls (yet), thus can only be used between two individuals.
Commenting on the new update, a Whatsapp spokesman said;
“We’re introducing this feature because we know that sometimes voice and text just aren’t enough. There’s no substitute for watching your grandchild take her first steps, or seeing your daughter’s face while she’s studying abroad.
And we want to make these features available to everyone, not just those who can afford the most expensive new phones or live in countries with the best cellular networks. Over the years we’ve received many requests from our users for video calling, and we’re excited to finally offer this feature to the world”.
