On the heels of the announcement of the Whatsapp messenger web client and celebrating crossing the 700 million monthly user mark. Whatsapp is quietly rolling out the long rumoured voice calling feature for selected Android devices. There is no official announcement yet but a video and screenshot of the new feature surfaced on Reddit.

The Whatsapp Voice calling feature is said to be available on the WhatsApp’s 2.11.508 version which is not yet available officially even on Google Play Store but is available officially from the company’s website.

The user also emphasised on the fact that, even when you have the latest version of the app. If a user with the feature doesn’t invite you it is not possible to unlock the feature – which means the Whatsapp voice calling feature would be based on an invite system.

This leaked screenshot resembles the ones which surfaced last year; with the interface showing three tabs for Calls, Chats and contacts. It also keeps a record of recent Whatsapp calls and also shows the Whatsapp name plus image of whoever you are calling.

Last year, Whatsapp CEO Jan Koum promised a Q1 2015 release of the feature citing technical difficulties which means the app is still in line to get the feature this year.

Expect Whatsapp to be cautios with rolling out the feature as it would like to have the necessary data center to have calls from its over 700 million users base.
