Yezz Billy 4 Specs Review

Asides Microsoft Lumia smartphones, it is very rare seeing Windows Phones from other OEMs in Nigeria but Yezz Mobile is correcting that notions with the launch of the Yezz Billy 4 and the Yezz Billy 4.7.

For this article, we will be focusing on the N16,000 priced Yezz Billy 4 which like most WP phones released for a while isn’t a flagship but would perform decently and provide band for the buck provided it is priced accordingly.

Yezz Billy 4 Specifications

As the name suggests, the Yezz Billy 4 features a 4-inch (480 x 800 pixels) WVGA TFT capacitive touchscreen display. Under the hood, it is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor clocked at 1.2GHz paired with Adreno 302 GPU.

There is a rather small 512MB of RAM to handle operations and 4GB (1.1GB user available) space of internal storage to handle files and app. However, a microSD card slot is onboard for storage expansion up to 128GB.

Handling photography on the device is a rear facing 8MP camera with LED flash and a front facing 1.3MP camera for video chats. Connectivity options on the Billy 4 includes – 3G HSPA+, Dual band Wi-Fi  802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB v2.0, GPS, A-GPS and GLONASS.

Measuring 122.5 x 64.4 x 9.9mm in dimensions, the Yezz Billy 4 weighs 109 grams, comes with Dual Micro SIM support and runs Windows Phone 8.1. The device is expected to be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile OS but since it has just 512MB RAM, a striped down version of the mobile OS will be able to work seamlessly on it.

It is backed by a 1420mAh battery which is expected to provide up to 7 hours of talk time on 2G and 4 hours 30 minutes of talk time on 3G. The Yezz Billy 4 is available in Black, Blue, Champagne Gold, Gun Metal, Red, White and Yellow colour options.

PROS

• Decent camera
• Dual-SIM slots
• Moderately priced

CONS

• Bland UI
• Insufficient internal memory
• Low-Res display
• Small-ish Battery capacity
• Insufficient RAM
• No Cortana (this is a lesser issue, Cortana is not available in Africa yet)

Verdict

On paper, the Yezz Billy 4 is expected to take on the Microsoft Lumia 435 but the latter still manages to top with a newer version of Windows 8.1. Overall the device combines a blended mixture of the good and the bad with the camera impressing while the RAM, Battery life and ROM leaves something to be desired with.

Unlike the Yezz Andy A6M and Andy A5T, the Yezz Billy 4 is moderately priced at N16,000 and apart from appealing, it would also be ideal for those interested in using other mobile OS apart from Android which has the largest number of smartphones in the market.

(Extra: The Billy Name was coined in honour of Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft.)
