Late last year, Medical Electronic Systems (MES) announced the launch of the YO Home Sperm Test, an at-home sperm testing kit and app for smartphones. With this, men can test their sperm from the comfort of their smartphone and have a fair idea of their fertility status.
Compared to other home fertility tests, YO is not limited to measuring total sperm concentration only, it is the first and only video-based smartphone platform that is FDA-cleared to measure Motile Sperm Concentration (the number of moving sperm) — a critical factor in determining male fertility.
Created by the team behind MES’s “gold standard” laboratory sperm quality analyzers, used in hospitals and labs around the world; the YO makes turn the smartphone’s camera into a microscope. Once the sample has been collected and droplets are made available on the slide (inserted into the YO clip), that connects to the device, it records the video of the live sperm while the app is analysing the ‘swimmers’.
Available for free download, the YO home sperm test companion app (Android or iOS) delivers easy-to-understand and accurate results.
YO is available for pre-order on the company’s website. It sells directly to consumers at $49.95 for two tests and will begin shipping in January 2017. Currently, there are no slide refills for sale but this could change in the future.
