To appeal to a wider audience Facebook now let’s signup for Facebook Messenger without a Facebook account. Joining other services like Whatsapp and other similar mobile only messaging apps which let’s you login with your phone number instead.
To Signup for Facebook Messenger, Users now have a new option to choose ‘Not on Facebook’ along with the ‘Login with Facebook option’. Once you go for the ‘Not on Facebook’ option, you will be required to input your phone number to sign up. You will be also required to give a name and a photo to complete the registration process.
Accessing Facebook Messenger with a Facebook account gives you extra features to manage contact and friend list and take advantage of multi-device messaging across mobile devices, the web and tablets. But for those who wants to enjoy the numerous features of the Messenger without a fb account, it is now possible too.
For now, only residents of United States, Peru, Venezuela and Canada can signup for Facebook Messenger without a Facebook account. Facebook is unusually silent if the rollout would reach other regions and locations at some point. However, we hope it would cross the shores soon.
Update as of July 16, 2015: The ability to sign up for Messenger without a Facebook account is now available globally.
