Zimperium launches Stagefright Detector App for Android smartphones

Zimperium has announced the ‘StageFright Detector App‘ a tool to help Android smartphones owners check their level of vulnerability to the StageFright threat.

Some days ago, the company uncovered what is reported as the worst ever vulnerability on Android with about 95% smartphones (950 million Android devices) susceptible to the threat of StageFright with the issue stemming from Android’s StageFright Multimedia framework.

By sending malicious MMS to the vulnerable smartphone, the device would process the MMS whether it is read or unread as a Multimedia file. As such hackers will gain easy access to your smartphone and can even delete the original message sent in without your knowledge.

The company also announced it now has an alliance with some of the largest global carriers and device manufacturers with over 25 of them under an umbrella called the  ‘Zimperium Handset Alliance’ (ZHA).

Zimperium would also work with carriers and device vendors to design solutions that would protect users without the Zimperium zIPS app enabled on their phones.

Earlier this week, Both Google and Samsung announced they would be releasing monthly security updates for their smartphones. Samsung’s KNOX Team were also also credited for creating an app that helps users disable MMS on their devices. The app is called the Samsung MMS Control app.
