Evolution of Android – From 1 to 10 [Infographic]

In September 2019, Google unveiled its latest mobile OS update – Android 10 (a.k.a. Android Q) and announced the discontinuation of naming every major update after desserts, instead opting to now only go with the numbering sequence. The update brought features such as live caption, smart reply, gesture navigation, dark background theme, sound amplifier, privacy controls, faster security updates, digital well being, family link and more.

According to Statcounter Globalstats (October 2019), Android continues to dominate the global market as it accounts for 41.19% of the worldwide operating system market share. This figure is followed by Windows (34.8%), iOS (13.52%), OS X (7.1%), Unknown (1.36%) and Linux (0.81%). Out of the world’s mobile OS market share, it accounts for 76.67% which breaks down into Android 9.0 Pie (35.25%), Android 8.1 Oreo (14.58%), Android 6.0 Marshmallow (13.32%), Android 8.0 Oreo (9.98%), Android 7.0 Nougat (8.06%), Android 5.1 Lollipop (6.84%), 7.1 Android Nougat (5.53%), Android 5.0 Lollipop (2.58%) and Android 4.4 Kitkat (2.36 %).

From mobile devices and mPOS systems to Smart TVs and smartwatches, Android has found its way into almost every smart device option available and continues to be adopted in various industries. Being the most used platform on affordable smartphones has boosted Android’s role in ensuring that technology is easily accessible by the masses. At enterprise-level, Android-powered devices are preferred for operational efficiency and user familiarity.
