Meta Announce Instagram-based Threads To Rival Twitter

Meta’s new Twitter rival, Threads is now available to download in over 100 countries and regions of the world. The Instagram Based app, which is currently not available in Ireland and the entire EU due to regulatory issues, joins other Twitter-alternative platforms such as Mastodon, Tribel Social, and Bluesky.

To sign-up for threads (available on App Store and Play Store), a new or existing Instagram account is the key requirement. Users can opt to either create a fresh profile or import all their existing profile information (and verification) from Instagram. Most of the features available on Threads are a bit similar to what’s being offered by Twitter.

Users can Thread (Tweet), Repost (Retweet), Quote threads and Follow/Restrict profiles. They can post and reply to texts (up to 500 characters), links, photos, and videos (up to 5 minutes in length). Thanks to its connection to Instagram, threads can be posted directly to Instagram Stories. There is however, no Direct Messaging (DM) or Hashtag feature as at launch.

Users under 16 or under 18 in select regions have their profile default to private whenever they join Threads. Meta will continue to roll out new features as well as ensuring compatibility with ActivityPub protocol. This makes it possible to exchange information with platforms such as Mastodon and WordPress. The app received over 10 million users at launch and has crossed over 100 million signups in five days. It is currently the fastest growing app in history, going ahead of ChatGPT and TikTok.
